In response to the quickly growing monkeypox outbreak, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency on Monday. It is the third state in as many days to do so. The list of states includes Illinois. The governors have stated that they will increase the administration of the vaccine to fight the disease. Additionally, they will work on contact tracing and efforts to prevent the spread.
Monkeypox emergency: 6,000 cases in the US so far

Monkeypox was deemed a worldwide health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) last month. According to WHO, more than 19,000 cases of monkeypox came up in at least 78 nations. Throughout the past, monkeypox spread slowly in West and Central Africa, mainly carried by rats and other animals. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 6,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in the United States, spread among 48 states. Since Boston health officials identified the first case in the United States in May, the outbreak has rapidly expanded.
Bob Fenton and Demetre Daskalakis will be introduced as the nation’s coordinator and deputy, respectively, for the monkeypox outbreak, The White House announced on Monday (1ts August) night, strengthening its position against the illness. Fenton is the one who took the lead to help the country against its COVID-19 vaccination efforts as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s acting administrator. The division of HIV prevention at the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is directed by Daskalakis.
The move would bring a “whole-of-government response”
The Governor of California’s office stated that Gavin’s move would bring to the fight “a whole-of-government response” that would end up helping with the funds for the vaccine, research, and outreach. “We’ll continue to work with the federal government to secure more vaccines, raise awareness about reducing risk, and stand with the LGBTQ community fighting stigmatizing,” he stated. Since there haven’t been any reported deaths in the United States so far, monkeypox is rarely lethal. However, some individuals experience extreme discomfort as a result of the virus-induced rash. If the outbreak is not controlled, scientists and public health officials are concerned that monkeypox may become a persistent disease in the United States.

“We need to use every tool we have”
The statement on monkeypox was hailed by state senator Scott Wiener. Sen Wiener is a Democrat from San Francisco and the author of several laws addressing LGBTQ+ concerns. He stated, “We need to use every tool we have to control it.” J.B Pritzker’s declaration will also grant the Department of Public Health in Illinois complete authority to disseminate vaccines. Additionally, it will educate the public about the virus. The virus “requires the full mobilization of all available public health resources to prevent the spread,” he stated.

Pritzker’s move “will open efficient lines of communication and cooperation across state lines, an essential step in tracking monkeypox and improving tools and processes to prevent it,” stated Sameer Vohra. Vohra who happens to be the Department of Public Health. “This emergency declaration brings a necessary, increased focus to the MPV outbreak we’re seeing here in Chicago, across our state, and around the country,” stated Lori Lightfoot. Lightfoot is The Mayor of Chicago.
She also stated that the declaration was much needed because of the severity of the cases.
