Busted: German pizzeria's menu item #40 came with a side of cocaine

In a case that reads like a crime drama script, German authorities have uncovered an elaborate drug trafficking operation masked behind a seemingly ordinary pizzeria in Düsseldorf, where ordering “pizza number 40” came with an illicit side serving of cocaine.

The perfect recipe for crime

“That was one of the best-selling pizzas,” criminal director Michael Graf von Moltke told reporters, revealing how a simple menu item became code for cocaine delivery. The investigation began when local food inspectors’ suspicions led to police surveillance of the establishment in March.

The initial break in the case came during a raid on the pizzeria manager’s apartment, resulting in an almost comedic turn of events. The 36-year-old manager, upon hearing police at his door, attempted to dispose of evidence by throwing it out of his window. According to Düsseldorf police, the bag of drugs “fell right into the arms of the police officers.” The seized evidence painted a clear picture of the operation’s scale, with authorities recovering 1.6 kilograms of cocaine, 400 grams of cannabis, and 268,000 euros in cash.

A second serving

In an audacious move that ultimately led to the operation’s complete dismantling, the manager resumed his illicit business shortly after his release from detention. This decision provided investigators with a crucial opportunity to trace the broader drug network.

Major drug ring takedown

The investigation culminated in a large-scale operation involving 150 officers who discovered an extensive criminal enterprise. During their raids, authorities uncovered two cannabis plantations: one in Mönchengladbach with 300 plants, and another in Solingen housing 60 plants. The operation also yielded an arsenal of cutting and stabbing weapons, alongside substantial cash reserves and luxury watches.

The sweep led to the arrest of three primary suspects, including the pizzeria manager who was caught while attempting to flee the country, and the alleged mastermind—a 22-year-old identified as the head of the drug operation. The investigation extended to twelve additional suspects whose properties and businesses were raided during the operation.

Ongoing investigation

While authorities have successfully dismantled the operation, they have not disclosed the price charged for the special “menu item 40.” By German privacy laws, the identities of those arrested remain confidential.

The case highlights how criminal enterprises continue to devise creative methods to conceal drug trafficking operations within legitimate businesses, and demonstrates the effectiveness of cooperation between various governmental agencies in detecting and dismantling such schemes. The investigation serves as a reminder that illegal operations can hide behind the most ordinary of facades – even a neighborhood pizzeria’s menu.
