Disturbing Incident Sparks Protests and Allegations of Police Brutality
A British police officer was caught on video kicking and stomping on a man’s head at Manchester Airport on Tuesday night, leading to widespread protests and accusations of police brutality. The video shows the officer, holding a taser, kicking the man in the head, and stomping on his back while other officers keep witnesses at bay.
Shocking video and public outcry
The man lies motionless on the ground as the officer continues his assault, causing onlookers to scream in shock. A woman in a hijab attempts to intervene. The footage also shows police kicking another man sitting on a bench. Both men were eventually handcuffed and taken into custody.
Official response and investigation
Manchester Police (GMP) acknowledged the incident, stating that firearms officers were attacked while trying to arrest a suspect after a fight broke out in Terminal 2 around 8:30 p.m. Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry described the footage as “truly shocking” and confirmed that an officer was removed from duties. The case has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) for review.
Protests and community reaction
The video’s circulation led to protests, with hundreds gathering at a police station in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Protesters voiced their anger, accusing the police of brutality and demanding accountability. One protester said, “We’re no longer going to settle for this police brutality. We put our trust in the police, and what do they do instead? They inflict violence upon us when we surrender to them.”
According to police, officers were responding to a fight and were attacked during the arrest attempt. Three officers were hospitalized, including a female officer with a broken nose. Two men were arrested on charges including assault and affray. Witness Amar Minhas reported seeing the police pin a young man against the wall, leading to a fight where the man was tasered and then kicked.
Official statements
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham called the video “disturbing” and acknowledged the deep concern it has caused. The incident has prompted a comprehensive review by the IOPC to ensure appropriate action is taken.
