A look at the next potential monarchs in the British Royal Family

Questions about the future of the British monarchy arose just moments after Buckingham Palace announced King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis. Charles’ diagnosis came after a prostate procedure last month, according to the palace, though it did not specify the type of cancer or stage.

Officials said the diagnosis was unrelated to the benign prostate condition.

The palace stated that Charles began treatment on Monday and will postpone public appearances for the time being.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” Buckingham Palace said. “He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”

Even so, many people wondered, “What’s next?”

Charles became king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth, died in 2022.

His sons and grandchildren are now next in line for the monarchy.

Here are the first fifteen people, in order of succession.
