Terrorist assaults have been witnessed throughout the world. Large numbers of lives are lost and property is destroyed as a result of these dreadful attacks. Those who make it through these attacks are seen as lucky, but are they? A 23-year-old woman, Shanti De Corte, who had survived a terrorist attack as a teen passed away after choosing to be put to sleep. Due to the bomb explosion she saw when she was 17 years old, Shanti De Corte suffered from depression and PTSD.
About the incident
An ISIS bomb exploded on March 22, 2016, as she and her classmates were moving through the departures area of the Belgian airport in Zaventem in preparation for a trip to Italy. According to the Daily Mail, the explosion resulted in 32 fatalities and more than 300 injuries.
Shanti was physically unharmed by the blast, but she has been in pain mentally ever since. She was psychologically affected as a result of the experience, frequently experiencing panic attacks and depression periods.
Finally, in May of this year, she opted to be euthanized
For people with “a medically futile condition of constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be relieved, resulting from a serious and incurable disorder caused by illness or accident,” euthanasia is legal in Belgium.
Two psychiatrists granted Shanti’s formal request to be put to death earlier this year, according to RTBF. She died on May 7, 2022, however, her story only recently came to light after her mother Marielle spoke to VRT news. ‘That day really cracked her, she never felt safe after that,’ said Shanti’s mother.
“I feel like a ghost that is no longer able to feel anything”: Shanti
Shanti routinely posted on social media about the atrocities she had seen before choosing to end her life. She stated in one article that she formerly took up to 11 antidepressants daily, adding, “I couldn’t live without it.”
“I feel like a ghost that can no longer feel anything because of all the meds I take. Perhaps there are alternatives to prescription drugs.” She wrote.
In a final post, she posted on the day she died, Shanti wrote “I was laughing and crying. Until the last day. I loved and was allowed to feel what true love is. Now I will go away in peace. Know that I miss you already.”
