Tragedy unfolds mid-air
A Qatar Airways flight from Melbourne to Doha took a devastating turn when a passenger suddenly collapsed and died mid-flight, leaving those on board in shock. Despite the crew’s immediate efforts to provide medical assistance, the individual could not be saved before the plane reached its destination.
Couple seated beside deceased passenger
Among the passengers were Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin, who found themselves in an unexpectedly distressing situation. The tragic incident occurred when a woman exited the restroom and suddenly collapsed near their row. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead on the flight as reported by nine.com.
As the cabin crew attempted to move the body, they initially considered transferring her to the business class section but were unable to navigate the narrow aisle. With few options, they decided to place the deceased passenger in Ring and Colin’s row.
“They looked frustrated, then saw available seats beside me. My wife was on the other side, and we were in a row of four. They asked me to move over, and I agreed. Then they placed the lady in the seat I had been in,” Ring recounted.
Passengers left unsettled
Despite the distressing situation, the couple claimed they were not offered alternative seating. However, a nearby passenger noticed Colin’s discomfort and offered her an empty seat. “I could see a few spare seats around us,” Ring noted.
For the next four hours, Ring remained seated next to the deceased passenger. Even after landing, he was instructed to stay in place while medical personnel removed the body. “I can’t believe they told us to stay… it wasn’t nice,” he said, describing the experience as deeply unsettling.
Airline responds
Qatar Airways acknowledged the incident and stated it was in the process of reaching out to affected passengers.
“First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family of the passenger who sadly passed away on board our flight,” a Qatar Airways spokesperson said.
The airline added, “We apologize for any inconvenience or distress this incident may have caused and are in the process of contacting passengers in line with our policies and procedures.”
Qantas, through which the couple booked their flight, confirmed that it would communicate with them directly regarding the situation.
