Former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to four years in Myanmar jail. The Junta court convicted Suu Kyi of three criminal charges. However, people believe Myanmar’s junta is coming up with false charges. Here’s all you need to know.
Aung San Suu Kyi charged with jail time
A junta court in Maynmar convicted Aung San Suu Kyi of three criminal charges according to an AFP report. The ousted civilian leader is sentenced to four years of jail time. She was first found guilty of two charges. One for breaking a COVID-19 protocol and another for illegally importing and owning walkie-talkies, according to a source. However, the 76-year-old appeared to court wearing prison clothes on December 17, 2021. For breaking COVID-19 protocol and incitement against the military, she earned two years in jail.
Aung San Suu Kyi is also on trial for several other crimes. In total, carrying a maximum sentence of over 100 years in jail. However, the Nobel laureate has denied the charges. Suu Kyi’s supporters believe the countless charges are for legitimizing military actions and to prevent her from returning to politics. As of now, the junta has not stated her sentence. However, they pointed out that the trials, conducted by an independent court. Moreover, they are not disclosing the location of where she will be held.

Since February 2021, the Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government ousting by the military junta, Myanmar has been drowning in chaos. Several pro-democracy protests are erupting across Myanmar. However, the junta is opposing protests and brutally cracking down on protestors leading to deaths of over 1,400 and several injured.
Additionally, there is no certainty on the treatment of prisoners. Journalists do not have entry to the former leader’s trial in Naypyitaw. Additionally, lawyers are forbidden from speaking with the public or the media.
