At Art Basel Miami Beach, artist Narine Arakelian is selling one of her eggs as a non-fungible token (NFT).
The Armenian artist, 42, made “Live,” a painting that includes a contract for one of her eggs as NFT. Arakelian’s egg is given to the buyer of the item. She wants them to have a child with it, she told Page Six.
The piece is still available for purchase as a non-financial token (NFT), a type of digital art that a buyer unlocks with a unique blockchain code.
Arakelian told Page Six that she would prefer for her piece if a couple seeking fertility treatment buys it. According to Page Six, she is the mother of a 21-year-old boy.
“I am so happy to bring a child into the world through my artwork. It’s a beautiful act of creativity to give the gift of art and life,” said Arakelian, who uses her art to create a commentary on gender identity and social issues.
Arakelian didn’t say how involved she would be with the child as a result of her work. She told Page Six that she thinks her painting is “wonderful” and that it could lead to a baby.
She added that “the child will be a child once they are born, not a piece of art.”
The painting “Live” is part of Arakelian’s “Love, Hope, Live” series, however only the “Live” section features an NFT.
Hers wasn’t the only NFT on display in Miami during Art Basel. Tina Turner’s Versace gown and former Donald Trump lawyer Michael Cohen’s jail badge were among the others.
