American tourist feared devoured by shark in Indonesia after being swept out to sea

A 68-year-old tourist from South Dakota, USA, is feared to have been devoured by a shark while on a diving vacation in Indonesia. Colleen Monfore was enjoying a dream holiday, exploring the pristine waters of the Indonesian archipelago, when a chilling turn of events occurred. Monfore, along with six other divers, was exploring the waters near Pulau Reong, an island off Indonesia’s southwestern coast, when strong currents swept her out to sea. Despite efforts from the guide, Monfore was unable to return to the boat.

Extensive search operation ends in tragedy

Following Monfore’s disappearance, authorities launched an intensive eight-day search operation. Sadly, the diver remained missing. In a grim twist, human remains were found inside a shark caught by a fisherman from East Timor, a neighboring country to Indonesia. The discovery, made on October 6, has sparked fears that Monfore may have been consumed by the shark.

The fisherman, who caught the shark in East Timor waters, described the shocking find: “The shark wasn’t in good health. I thought it had swallowed plastic or a fishing net. When we cut it open, we found the remains of a woman inside.” Local authorities in East Timor have since contacted the Indonesian coast guard and are investigating whether the remains belong to anyone reported missing from the nearby islands, a popular spot for diving excursions.

International coordination in the investigation

Muhammad Saleh Goro, head of the UPTD for the Management of Alor Islands Marine Park in Indonesia, confirmed the international cooperation: “We have coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy in Dili, Timor Leste, and they have confirmed the truth of this information. The remains of a woman were found inside a shark in Timor Leste waters, not Indonesian territory. We are now working to confirm if this could be someone reported missing from Indonesia.”

Goro added that evidence from the diving suit led officials to believe the victim may have been an adventure-seeking diver: “Based on the diving suit, it is suspected the victim was a diver. Further investigations are ongoing, and we will release more information as it becomes available.”

Initial search and rescue efforts

Ipda Giovani BM Toffy, chief of police in Southwest Maluku, recounted the initial search efforts after Monfore’s disappearance: “The first search was undertaken by her companions as they were on the same trip. We coordinated with the Nabar Village Government to mobilize residents and search the coastline near Reong Island. Boats were also dispatched, but unfortunately, we could not locate the victim.”

A diver’s paradise with a tragic turn

Pulau Reong, located in Indonesia’s Alor Archipelago, has recently gained popularity among diving enthusiasts. Known for its rich marine life, untouched corals, and extraordinary underwater experiences, it has become a sought-after destination for adventurous scuba divers. However, this tragic incident has cast a shadow over the region’s idyllic reputation, as authorities work to determine whether the human remains found inside the shark belong to Colleen Monfore.
