How can Benjamin Netanyahu return as Israel’s PM?

With the approval of divisive legislation by the Israeli parliament, Benjamin Netanyahu can return as the Prime Minister. Moreover, the change also makes it possible for Bezalel Smotrich to serve as a minister in the defense ministry. Additionally, the lawmakers allowed anyone convicted of offenses but has not received a custodial sentence to become a minister. 63 out of 120 parliamentarians voted in favor, allowing the amendments. Smotrich was an enthusiastic supporter of the settlement expansion in the West bank’s occupied region. With this law, he will gain power over the West Bank’s administration and in turn the lives of several Palestinians.

The Supreme Court stated it will hear an appeal against appointing Deri by the “Democracy’s Bastion” group. The group is made up of academics, former diplomats, and scientists. Additionally, the Knesset voted for extending the powers of the national security minister. The portfolio will soon be handed over to Itamar Ben Gvir. Gvir, a far-right figure has ties of incendiary rhetoric against Arabs.

More on the new coalition government formation:

It took Benjamin Netanyahu about two months after winning the elections to make deals with his allies. In return for support, several allies are demanding a significant share of power. Hence, Netanyahu agreed with his far-right partners to make changes to secure his new government. he will be swearing in the new coalition government on Thursday. The new government is also considered one of the most right-wing administrations in the history of Israel. Additionally, as per Yair Lapid, the legal changes by the government are proving them to be “the most corrupt ever” before being sworn in. Lapid is the outgoing PM of Israel.
