"Aggressive" water buffalo on the loose in Iowa: Police issue warning

Escaped Animal Sparks Concern in Pleasant Hill

Authorities in Iowa have issued a stern warning to residents to steer clear of a “dangerous” and injured water buffalo that has been roaming free since Saturday. The Pleasant Hill Police Department has been actively searching for the animal and is urging the public to remain vigilant and cautious.

The ordeal began on Saturday when officers responded to reports of an “animal in the road” in Pleasant Hill, a city approximately six miles east of Des Moines. Upon arrival, police discovered the animal was an “aggressive” water buffalo, as identified by its owner.

In an attempt to neutralize the situation, an officer fired a shot at the water buffalo after it exhibited “aggressiveness” towards the responding officers. Despite being injured, the animal managed to escape, adding urgency to the search efforts.

Coordinated efforts: “We are using all resources”

The Pleasant Hill Police Department has been collaborating with Des Moines Animal Control to capture and return the water buffalo to its owner. However, they admitted to lacking “tranquilizers or equipment to handle such a unique situation,” according to a statement released on Facebook on Monday.

To aid in the search, officers are utilizing ATVs to patrol bicycle trails and the vicinity of Little Fourmile Creek, where the animal was last sighted as of Monday afternoon. The department is also leveraging drone technology from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and enlisting the help of local experts familiar with handling such animals.

“The safety of the Pleasant Hill community is our top priority,” police emphasized. “With a dangerous animal loose in our community, we are using all resources available to keep our community safe and attempt to return the animal to its owner, if possible.”

Community involvement: A plea for vigilance

The Iowa Farm Sanctuary has also entered the fray, expressing their readiness to provide immediate veterinary care if the injured water buffalo, which they have nicknamed “Hank,” is found alive. The sanctuary revealed that the animal escaped during a loading process for meat processing.

In a Facebook statement, the sanctuary indicated they are in contact with the owner and hope to bring the water buffalo to a sanctuary, though they acknowledged the owner might still pursue the original plan. “We remain cautiously optimistic!” they stated. “At this point, I think most of our state is rooting for a happy ending for Hank!”

Sightings and precautions

Amid ongoing search efforts, the elusive water buffalo has been spotted on Ring footage near the front door of a Pleasant Hill home and was also filmed by a resident in his backyard on Monday.

Authorities are urging anyone who encounters the animal to avoid approaching it and immediately contact the Pleasant Hill Police Department at 515-265-1444.

As the search continues, the community of Pleasant Hill remains on high alert, hoping for a swift and safe resolution to this unusual and potentially dangerous situation.
