It is natural for children to seek parental care and protection during their formative years as they learn to fend for themselves in the world. In rare circumstances, though, children demonstrate amazing strength and fortitude, as one 8-year-old kid just did by surviving two days alone in Michigan State Park by eating snow, sleeping under a log
Survived by eating snow, sleeping under a log
After going missing while camping with his family, he managed to live for two days in the chilly and lonely Michigan woods. According to the BBC, Nante Niemi survived by eating snow and lying beneath a log for protection.
According to a Michigan State Police press release, it all started when the child got lost while collecting firewood near his family’s campsite in Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The release noted, “He had braved the elements by taking shelter under a log where he was ultimately found.”
The boy was found to be in good health
On Monday around 1.30 p.m., the youngster was found and reunited with his family. He was discovered in good health, two kilometers from his tent.
According to investigators, the youngster “ate clean snow for hydration.”
“A number of you have asked how Nante survived in the woods. Lieutenant Wickstrom says the boy told them he covered up with branches and leaves for warmth and also blanketed the log he was under. He didn’t have any food but ate clean snow for hydration,” Michigan State Police mentioned in a tweet.
It also revealed, “He walked a trail yesterday (Sunday), and when he ran out of the trail, he figured the best thing to do was to just stop and wait. They offered to carry him out today, but he told the guys who found him that he wanted to walk!”
Search and rescue operation in the wilderness
The area is “very remote and hilly with a lot of standing water due to the time of year,” according to the BBC report. Because of the amount of snow, several roads were impassable.
