Today, the internet is one of the necessities of life. However, the results from a new survey in the US are surprising. According to it, over half of the respondents stated that they want to vanish from the web, if possible.

Why do people want to erase themselves from the internet?

According to a new study conducted by NordVPN, over 55 percent of Americans taking the survey want to vanish from the internet. The study was conducted by Propeller Insights, a market research firm. Conducted in December 2021, it includes about 1,002 US consumers above the age of 18. In addition to deleting their presence, about 47 percent stated that they don’t trust it. While 46 percent stated that they have no reason to have their name online, 42 percent showed fear of getting hacked. Moreover, 18 percent of the respondents wished that the internet was not there while eight percent were not using it.

The need for a safer online presence:

When asked what kind of details they want to take down or vanish, 60 percent of Americans wished to remove their financial information. 26 percent of the surveyors admitted they want embarrassing moments and old profiles deleted. Close to 24 and 23 percent of people do not want unflattering images/ videos and previous employment history online.

After all, in this highly connected world, being anonymous is harder than ever before. About 31 percent of people stated that they are willing to pay up to $100 for a safe VPN service. While a VPN service cannot make you anonymous, it helps is stopping others from identifying your location. Additionally, browsers and people cannot track you. Services such as password generators and managers are useful in tracking your passwords and keeping them safe. Additionally, it also creates powerful passwords and stores them.
