As layoffs in the tech industry increase, Google parent Alphabet stated on January 20 that it plans to lose around 12,000 employees, or 6% of its global workforce, according to Bloomberg.

The job layoffs will have an impact on the entire company.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, informed staff in an email today that he accepts “full responsibility for the decisions that led us here.”

“These are important moments to sharpen our focus, re-engineer our cost base, and direct our talent and capital to our highest priorities,” Pichai added.

The layoffs touch teams throughout the organization, including recruiting, some corporate services, and some engineering and product teams.

According to Google, the layoffs are global and will affect US employees immediately.

In accordance with the news, Pichai noted that the tech giant will “support employees as they explore for their next opportunity”.

In the United States, Pichai claimed that the company will pay employees during the entire notice period (minimum 60 days).

Google will also provide a severance compensation starting at 16 weeks’ salary plus two weeks for each consecutive year of employment, as well as expedite at least 16 weeks of GSU vesting.

They will pay 2022 bonuses and remaining vacation time for employees affected, as well as provide 6 months of healthcare, job placement services, and visa assistance.

Furthermore, outside of the United States, the search engine giant will support personnel in accordance with local practices.

The statement follows Reuters‘ story that Google is postponing a chunk of its employees’ year-end incentives as part of a transition to a new performance management system.

According to Reuters, the company will pay an 80% advance bonus to eligible employees first, followed by the remaining in later months. The decision was announced to employees last year. (https://bolivarescapes.com)
