Elon Musk could bring back Donald Trump on Twitter. Platform’s suspension of former President Donald Trump could no longer continue. However, this will only be possible after the finalization of Musk’s deal. This indicates how open the platform could become to free expression under his control. The move to ban Trump from Twitter did not stifle the former president’s opinion. It rather magnified his ideas among political right-wingers.
The Tesla CEO said Tuesday, “I think that was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the country and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice.”
He explained that banning Trump’s account was a “morally bad decision” and “foolish in the extreme”. Musk has often slammed Twitter’s content moderation choices. It includes banning Trump for “incitement of violence”.
However, he has largely remained silent on what he plans to do about Trump’s account. Peter Campbell, an automotive writer for the Financial Times, asked him for further information on Tuesday.
Musk’s comments raise the possibility of Donald Trump’s return to Twitter
Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey voiced his agreement on a Tuesday. In a tweet, he said, “generally permanent bans are a failure of ours and don’t work.”
Trump previously declined to come back on Twitter even if the ban would be lifted. Trump’s Twitter persona was a combination of policy announcements, many of which were surprising. It also includes criticism of the media, disparagement of women, as well as adulation for his followers.
When considering the Capitol incident and plans emerging online for potentially armed protests around President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, Twitter decided Trump’s statements constituted encouragement of violence. Musk’s comments on Tuesday raised the possibility of lifting the ban on several accounts. This could possibly allow the return of Trump’s account. However, there have been no comments from Twitter on this.
