Former US President Donald Trump’s social networking website Truth Social has been given the thumbs-up by Google, an affiliate of Alphabet Inc., according to a company representative.
Google announced on Wednesday that the app would soon be made accessible on the Play Store by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the company that runs Truth Social. An inquiry for comment from TMTG was not immediately answered.
A Google spokeswoman stated in August that there had not been enough content filtering for the Play Store to carry TruthSocial, which had its US debut on the Apple App Store in February.
Infractions of the Play Stores rules, which forbid material like physical threats and calls to violence, had raised issues with Google, which were communicated to Truth Social.
Android smartphone users in the US typically download apps through Google’s Play Store. Android users can download apps straight from websites or through competing app stores, albeit the latter frequently necessitates additional procedures and security approvals. Even after Google barred Truth Social from the Play Store, it was still accessible through those channels.
About 40% of smartphones sold in the US are Android-powered.
After being suspended from Twitter Inc, Facebook Inc, and Alphabet Inc’s YouTube following January 6, 2021, United States Capitol riots based on allegations that he had posted messages encouraging violence, Truth Social reinstated Trump’s social media profile more than a year later.
TMTG has committed to providing an “engaging and censorship-free experience” on Truth Social in an effort to win over a base that believes its opinions on contentious issues, like the results of the 2020 presidential election, have been erased from popular internet platforms.
