What is Bluesky?
Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO), launched ‘Bluesky,’ a new application on Android. The app will serve as a Twitter alternative as per a New York Post report. As per the application’s website, the “social internet of the future” is going to serve creators with more options. It also offers creators “independence from platforms”. However, it is currently under development and can be accessed through an invite code.
“We’re building the AT Protocol, a new foundation for social networking which gives creators independence from platforms, developers the freedom to build, and users a choice in their experience,” explains the website. Dorsey developed the website as a side project using financing from Twitter. It was first rolled out to iOS users in late February.

As per TechCrunch, the platform offers basic features for monitoring likes or bookmarks, quote-tweeting, modifying tweets, hashtags, and direct messaging are currently not available on Bluesky. The demand has been growing with a currently active user base of 20,000. “According to app intelligence firm data.ai, Bluesky has seen 240,000-lifetime installs on iOS, 135,000 of which were just this month, up 39 percent from March’s 97,000,” revealed a TechCrunch report. Additionally, the platform is incorporating decentralization with the AT Protocol. This is an alternative to adding to the work done on ActivityPub. Activity Pub is a protocol that powers Mastodon, Twitter’s open-source.
