Apple on Monday announced lossless audio, spatial audio, and Dolby Atmos support for its subscribers, starting June 2021. Over 75 million subscribers can now avail of this at no extra cost. The move lets Apple Music compete and gain over Spotify with high-end music streaming that comes with an extra cost.

First, What is Dolby Atmos music?

Dolby Atmos Music is an immersive 3D audio experience that is quite unlike regular stereo music. Packed with a spatial audio feature for Apple Music users, it will give you a theatre-like experience. Having audio from all directions is always a fabulous occurrence.

What is lossless audio?

Lossless audio support is estimated to be one of the best sound quality and experience. It includes audio file support in FLAC, AIFF, and WAV formats. These high-resolution formats are better than or equal to CD audio quality. The only tradeoff is the large file size but, the audio quality makes it a worthy compromise.

How can I play Dolby Atmos music on Apple Music?

Dolby Atmos Music is going to be the new default for most Apple Music users. All your music, through your built-in iPhone, iPad, and Mac speakers, AirPods, headphones (with H1 or W1 chip), will play Doby Atmos Music by default. However, for other headphones, you will manually need to choose the option. You can do this by going to Settings > Music > Audio and toggle Dolby Atmos to switch to the ‘ON’ position.

Is my Apple device compatible with the new feature?

Apple Music with the premium sound experience will be available for all Apple devices with iOS 14.6, which will release in June alongside the spatial audio support.
Here are the devices that can handle Dolby Atmos and spatial audio support:

  • iPhone 7 or later
  • iPad 6th generation and later
  • MacBook Pro 2018 model and later
  • iPad Air, 3rd generation and later
  • iPad Pro 12.9‑inch, 3rd generation and later
  • Apple TV
  • iPad Pro 11‑inch
  • iPad mini 5th generation

Get ready to pop in your earphones and experience premium CD-quality audio soon. Apple Music is going to spoil regular music quality for you.
