Android has had a fingerprint sensor under the screen for a few years now. This new patent shows that iPhone 14 and other future Apple devices will finally have under-display Touch ID.
What is the new patent all about?
A new patent by Apple shows that the under-display technology will be a part of iPhone and Mac devices soon. This will allow the firm to place a camera under the display and allow biometric authentication. The patent goes into detail on how this technology will work. “An optical imaging array is aligned with the aperture. Above the aperture, the display is arranged and/or configured for increased optical transmittance,” states the patent.
Additionally, it also mentions that solutions like a wide bezel or notch are not ideal.“This conventional construction undesirably increases the apparent size of a bezel region circumscribing the display, while also undesirably increasing the size and volume of the housing of the electronic device,” it explains.
iPhone 14: The ultimate iPhone?
According to the talk on the grapevine, this new technology will be first implemented in the iPhone 14. However, iPhone 13 is next in line for the release. The new iPhone upgrade is ready to hit the stores in a month’s time. Hence, it could be stuck with a notch Face ID that is associated with iPhones recently.
Moreover, the newer iPhone models, except for the iPhone SE series, have completely dropped the Touch ID. Apple phones are completely relying on Face ID. However, it might be time for Apple to stop its reliance on Face ID. The pandemic has made it difficult to access iPhones without Touch ID options. After all, it is not feasible to risk infection by removing your mask just to unlock your phone
