The social media giant is planning to become a metaverse. People can soon move between VR, AR, and 2D devices using avatars. What does this mean for you, a Facebook user? Here’s everything we know about the new changes.
Reinventing Facebook
Mark Zuckerberg has been wanting to reinvent Facebook. “In the coming years, I expect people will make the transition from seeing us primarily as a social media company to seeing us as a metaverse company. In many ways the metaverse is the ultimate expression of social technology,” said Zuckerberg. He told journalists and analysts that he wishes to lead the company to a brand new internet.
But, what is the metaverse?
Metaverse is the vision of a future internet as a virtual world. First conceptualized in 1992 by Novelist Neal Stephson in his novel Snow Crash. The metaverse is a virtual 3D living space where you can enter, exit, and converse with others in real-time.
“What is the metaverse? It’s a virtual environment where you can be present with people in digital spaces. You can kind of think of this as an embodied internet that you’re inside of rather than just looking at,” explained Zuckerberg. Through this, you will mostly be interacting with people more than what you do right now.
How will Facebook play a role in the metaverse?
Remember that Facebook also owns Instagram, Whatsapp, and Oculus, a VR headset maker. This gives Zuckerberg a head start in making the metaverse a reality much faster than its competitors. These services offer Facebook a winning edge with customer relationships and connections. Why is it important? Well, through these the company knows who people behave online, their likes and dislikes, personality, emotional states, and even their eye movement!
With the added boost from its AR glasses and headsets, Zuckerberg expects Facebook to evolve in the next 5 years. Mark Zuckerberg, created the commercial need of Facebook and made it a global standard. With the 3D virtual reality world, is he’s creating the same demand?
