What is Claude 2: The ChatGPT competitor is now available in the US and the UK

On Tuesday, the US-based artificial intelligence startup Anthropic launched Claude 2, a conversational chatbot, in the US and the UK. The most recent chatbot reportedly competes directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has gained popularity since its 2022 debut. Claude 2 has a bigger chat window than ChatGPT and outperforms GPT-4 in terms of intelligence/cost ratio. “We are pleased to announce Claude 2, our new model. Claude 2 has improved performance, longer responses, and can be accessed via API as well as a new public-facing beta website, claude.ai,” the company said in its official blog.

While significantly behind, Claude 2 provides a comparable coding experience because it uses more context and has more recent training data. The chat window for Claude 2 is by far the largest, at 75,000 words. Users may now submit lengthy papers, reports, and PDFs and quickly receive summaries as a result. According to reports, the chatbot’s API is roughly five times less expensive. According to reports, Claude has been taught the “constitution,” also known as the rulebook, and is, therefore, less likely to display harmful material in his hallucinations. Although not many people are aware of the chatbot yet, it is quickly leveling up and is only second to ChatGPT in terms of ability.

Claude 2 is comparatively cheaper than GPT-4

According to the business, compared to its earlier models, it has achieved some advancements in coding, math, and logic. The most recent model outperformed Claude 1.3, scoring 76.5 percent more on the multiple-choice portion of the bar exam. “When compared to college students applying to graduate school, Claude 2 scores above the 90th percentile on the GRE reading and writing exams, and similarly to the median applicant on quantitative reasoning,” read the blog post.

Claude 2 is comparatively cheaper than GPT-4 and is capable of stronger reasoning and coding than Claude 1. When it comes to standard GREs, ChatGPT won verbal, quantitative, and USMLE, while Claude overtook ChatGT in GRE writing and Bar exams. While it trails, Claude 2 is fast leveling up. Claude 2 comes with 100k context which is nearly 5 times cheaper than GPT-4’s 32K. Prompt tokens are cheaper than completion tokens. They cost $11 compared to $60 per million tokens on GPT-4. Similarly, completion costs are $32 compared to $120 per million tokens, assuming both have similar tokenization lengths. Most importantly, Claude’s knowledge cutoff is in early 2023, while GPT-4 is in September 2021.

How to use Claude 2 in the US?

Anyone in the US or the UK can easily sign up for free on the Claude 2 page of Anthropic’s website. Users are asked to click on ‘Talk to Claude’ after which they need to provide an email ID. Once the email address is confirmed, one is ready to go.

Daniela and Dario Amodei, two former senior members of the OpenAI team, provided funding for Anthropic. Claude 2 can be considered a respectable substitute for ChatGPT in terms of performance, even though it is still in its early phases.
