Apple is set to introduce a new AI system, “Apple Intelligence,” at next week’s WWDC 2024, Bloomberg reports. This system will bring new AI features to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, including a ChatGPT-like chatbot powered by OpenAI.
What is Apple Intelligence?
Focus on Practical AI Features
Unlike competitors, Apple’s AI will emphasize practical applications like summarizations, reply suggestions, and an enhanced Siri capable of more app control. Apple aims to deliver AI features with broad appeal, steering clear of image or video generation.
Leveraging OpenAI and Apple’s Technology
Apple will utilize both its proprietary technology and OpenAI’s tools. A key feature is an algorithm to decide whether tasks can be processed on-device or need cloud server assistance. This approach ensures that data processed remotely remains as secure as on-device data, thanks to the use of Apple’s M2 chips and Secure Enclave in data centers.
Addressing security concerns
To mitigate security concerns, Apple will not create user profiles based on data and will provide transparency reports to assure users that their information isn’t being sold or read. This approach contrasts with Microsoft’s recent AI initiatives, which have faced criticism over security issues.
Device requirements and user options
The AI features will require devices powered by an M1 chip or later for iPad or Mac, while mobile requirements might be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro or upcoming iPhone 16 models. Importantly, Apple will make these AI capabilities optional, allowing users to opt in at their discretion.
WWDC 2024 promises to be a significant event as Apple continues to integrate advanced AI into its ecosystem, enhancing user experience while maintaining a strong focus on privacy and security.
