Watch video: Tesla’s humanoid robot is now capable of walking like humans

Tesla's humanoid robot is now capable of walking like humans

It’s one small step for the Tesla Optimus, one giant leap for Robot kind.

Tesla shared a video of its humanoid robot this week that shows the bounds it has made (literally) since the first shaky prototype was revealed at the marque’s AI day last year.

The clip, which was presented by billionaire CEO Elon Musk at Tesla’s shareholder meeting on Wednesday, showed that there are at least five more refined Optimus droids capable of a range of tasks. Our “companions,” as Musk calls them, appear to be able to walk, pick up items, and use gadgets designed by Tesla.

The video demonstrates not only the bipedal bot’s tremendous leaping ability but also how much control it has over movement. The bot’s rubber foot comes down on an egg in one shot, yet softly stops just before breaking it. Using the same Autopilot software as Tesla’s self-driving electric cars, Optimus is also learning to precisely map and navigate the world around it.

Optimus even gains knowledge from others

Optimus even learns from humans in the video. Essentially, motion-tracking outfits and head-mounted cameras are worn by operators who execute activities while the robot copies its actions. The idea is for the tasks to get increasingly challenging. According to Tesla’s website, the robot will one day be “capable of performing tasks that are unsafe, repetitive, or boring.” Musk stated that the bot is friendly and intended to help humankind with the jobs we don’t want to tackle. He has also pointed out that humans could both outrun and overpower the bot.

Even though engineers have only been working on Optimus for about a year, Musk anticipates that it will be ready in three to five years and will cost less than $20,000. He went on to say that the robot might become more important to the corporation than EVs. “My prediction is that the majority of Tesla’s long-term value will be Optimus, and that prediction I’m very confident of,” Musk said.
