Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, unveiled new calling and encrypted messaging tools on Tuesday. These new features are similar to those found in other social media applications such as Facebook and Instagram.
Forbes listed the famous microblogging platform as one of the top ten worldwide apps with the most monthly active users in 2022. Twitter also said earlier this week that it will begin deleting and archiving accounts that have been inactive for several years.
“With the latest version of the app, you can DM reply to any message in the thread (not just the most recent) and use any emoji reaction. The release of encrypted DMs V1.0 should happen tomorrow. This will grow in sophistication rapidly,” Elon Musk tweeted.
“The acid test is that I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head. Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” he added.
Twitter’s Feature Evolution: Unveiling DM Replies and Emoji Picker
Musk has previously unveiled ideas for a ‘Twitter 2.0 The Everything App,’ which would allow for long-form tweets, payments, and encrypted direct communications.
Direct messaging on Twitter will be available beginning Wednesday. However, it is unclear whether calls will be encrypted as well.
Talking about the two new features, Twitter Support wrote, “Introducing DM Replies! You can now reply to any message you receive in DMs, making conversations smoother and more intuitive.”
Like other applications, the app will add a new Emoji Picker to DMs, allowing users to respond to messages with a greater choice of emojis.
Twitter Support said that the network is trying to improve these tools and is seeking feedback from Twitter users on the new features.
Twitter has recently added and removed some new features.
$8.00 for a blue tick
Musk revealed on November 1st, 2017 that it will now charge customers $8 per month for a blue checkmark on the app. After a series of fraudulent accounts mimicking celebrities and brands paid for the feature and tweeted misleading information, the ability to pay for a blue tick was removed this year.
The Edit button
Twitter said on September 1, 2022, that it had begun testing the ‘edit button.’ This feature will allow users to change their tweets within 30 minutes of posting them.
The Twitter group
Twitter Circle, which debuted in May 2022, allows users to post content with a more limited audience. When using the functionality, users can select up to 150 individuals who will be able to see their tweets. This appears to be the same feature as Instagram’s ‘Close Friends’ feature.
