Europe rolls out 5G in flights.

The European Union announced that airlines flying to and out of the EU nations can start providing the latest 5G technology. This means that passengers can receive or send text messages, and calls and use data. The announcement comes as the European Commission updated the old decision on the spectrum of mobile communication on flights. They are going to provide 5G services using a pico-cell. This special network equipment connects the ground and in-flight network through a satellite.

“5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European companies. The sky is no longer the limit when it comes to possibilities offered by super-fast, high-capacity connectivity,” stated Thierry Breton. Breton is the commissioner for the internal market of the European Council. “The passengers aboard flights in the EU will be able to use their mobile phones to the maximum of their capacity and features,” confirmed the statement.

More on connectivity in the EU

Since 2008, the European commission’s decision has reserved some frequencies for communication on airplanes. The update on the implementation is paving way for the widespread deployment of 5G network services. In 2020, the US Federal Communications Commission bustled plans for allowing in-flight data and voice services citing opposition from airlines on safety grounds.

Additionally, the commission also amended a decision on 5GHz frequency bands. This will take the WiFi in the road transports up by a notch. The decision is also setting the stepping stones for innovations in the automotive industry. As per the implementing decision, the EU states will make 5GHz bands available at the latest by 30 June 2023.
