According to an announcement delivered by Fairplay and the Children’s Screen Time Action Network, rabbis, reverends, pastors, and other religious leaders have urged Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to permanently withdraw proposals to build an Instagram version tailored toward the young kids. Despite the rising backlash, Instagram abandoned plans to launch a children’s edition of the photo-sharing app in September.
A Senate panel questioned Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri in December about children’s internet safety. A group of state lawyers has commenced an inquiry into Meta for advertising Instagram to youngsters despite the threats. More than 70 religious authorities approved the letter. It asserts that social media platforms that target young brains, employ unethical data mining tactics. Also, they are encouraged by economic objectives and not equipped to improve children’s welfare.
“After much meditation and prayer, we assert that social media platforms target immature brains. They practice unethical data mining. And the profit motives are not a tool for the greater good of children,” said the letter.

Instagram’s version for Kids was to deliver a safer, devoted space for younger users to interact with the service, according to the company. The faith groups’ letter, which included references to the Bible, Qur’an, Pope Francis, and Buddhist monk Thch Nht Hnh, urged Zuckerberg, who has previously asserted that faith is “extremely important,” to deem spiritual as well as secular interests about the initiative.
