Amazon is going to provide drone delivery to shoppers following the final approval from the regulators. Here’s everything you need to know about Amazon’s new delivery option.
Amazon is starting drone delivery in Lockeford
According to Amazon, users in Lockeford, California can sign up to have their goods delivered by air directly to their homes. The e-commerce giant is promising drone delivery but faced several delays and setbacks. However, Amazon is planning to roll out its service after the initial run in Lockeford. Soon, they will program for dropping parcels in the backyards of customers. The Californian town has a population of about 4,000.
“The promise of drone delivery has often felt like science fiction. But later this year, Amazon customers living in Lockeford, California, will become among the first to receive Prime Air deliveries. (store.spaceylon.com) Their feedback about Prime Air will help us create a service that will safely scale to meet the needs of customers everywhere,” stated Amazon.

According to Amazon, the drones will fly “beyond-line-of-sight”. This means that visual observers are not needed to control it. Additionally, the employment of sensors will help prevent obstacles including aircraft, pets, people, and structures. In the past, Amazon was accused of promising drone delivery to push its Prime membership service. In 2013 Jeff Bezos pledged to have drones flying in five years. Later in 2019, he said it will happen “within months”.
“Once onboarded, customers in Lockeford will see Prime Air-eligible items on Amazon. They will place an order as they normally would and receive an estimated arrival time with a status tracker for their order,” explained Amazon. “For these deliveries, the drone will fly to the designated delivery location, descend to the customer’s backyard, and hover at a safe height. It will then safely release the package and rise back up to altitude,” it added.
