CES 2024 in Las Vegas: When and where to watch and what to expect

CES

It’s that time of year when the world’s hottest IT companies flock to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Between January 9 and 12, thousands of technology companies will present the finest of their goods in Las Vegas, Nevada. As corporations incorporate AI into their goods, it is projected to be a major talking point, similar to 2023. Health/tech devices are also expected to be a major focus.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will not attend the CES trade event in Las Vegas next week

When will the event be held? It will take place between January 9 and January 12. Two in-person Media Days, exclusive to press members, are also scheduled for January 7 and 8. The event will be hosted in Las Vegas, at the Nevada Convention Center, the Venetian Expo, and the Aria Resort & Casino. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will not attend the CES trade event in Las Vegas next week. However, the generative artificial intelligence fever that his business sparked last year will be on full display as device manufacturers scramble to develop consumer applications for the technology.

Hundreds of companies have planned announcements for the show about how they are incorporating AI into their products, ranging from devices for the visually impaired and gun safety systems in schools to facial-recognition software that can assess vitals and cabin-monitoring systems inside autonomous cars. OpenAI’s presence at the expo, despite Altman’s physical absence, is reminiscent of Apple and its founder Steve Jobs, whose clout was felt despite his absence, with numerous companies competing to demonstrate gadgets compatible with the company’s slick offerings.

Altman is widely considered as the poster child for the AI craze that has swept the computer world over the last year

Altman is widely considered as the poster child for the AI craze that has swept the computer world over the last year. He made headlines in November when he was momentarily removed by the ChatGPT maker’s board but was reinstated days later when more than 700 employees threatened to quit and join OpenAI backer Microsoft in solidarity. According to media sources, OpenAI is now working on a clandestine AI hardware project with renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive.

According to PitchBook data, funding for generative AI initiatives increased more than fivefold last year, reaching $23.78 billion by the beginning of December 2022. “It’s the year of AI in everything,” says Maribel Lopez, a tech analyst at Lopez Research. “If you don’t have AI in your product, don’t show up, it’s not worth talking about.” Bosch, which recently won a CES award for a near-invisible gun-detection system that combines video and audio AI for proactive security concerning weapons in schools, will talk on AI and cybersecurity at a show panel. NEC of Japan will introduce artificial intelligence software that allows mobile devices to monitor face patterns and pupil conditions in order to determine human vitals and mental health.

Automakers are now focusing on technology that allows for a “hyper-personalized” experience while purchasing and driving automobiles

A number of businesses are set to demonstrate how utilizing AI in vehicles makes them smoother and safer for drivers by improving in-vehicle virtual assistants and cabin monitors. After years of investing in AI-powered autonomous technology, automakers are now focusing on technology that allows for a “hyper-personalized” experience while purchasing and driving automobiles, according to Aakash Arora, a managing director at Boston Consulting Group. “They’re trying to figure out ‘if I could get to this level of customer experience, it can differentiate me in the market,'” he added of automakers.

For instance, Cerence, which makes AI-powered virtual assistants, is set to announce a partnership with Volkswagen, and Israel-based Cipia is expected to unveil a system that monitors signs of distraction and drowsiness in drivers. Many automakers are now using AI at various phases of production to save costs, according to Wendy Bauer, vice president of automotive and manufacturing at Amazon Web Services, which has BMW and Toyota as customers.

She believes that artificial intelligence can help carmakers save money by speeding up vehicle development and assuring better quality checks throughout manufacture. PC and smartphone manufacturers are also expected to demonstrate how their devices include AI, which chipmakers such as Intel and AMD believe will provide a new revenue stream. Microsoft announced on Thursday that PCs featuring a new AI button on the Windows keyboard will be on display during the conference.

However, it is not clear whether consumers will pay extra for AI capabilities on their computers because these developments perform less obvious tasks than OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot. “Consumers love ChatGPT, but the consumer benefit of having it on a device isn’t clear,” said Jay Goldberg, chief executive of D2D Advisory. “That’s why everyone is going to talk about it – because everyone is scrambling for the consumer utility.”
