Breezy Explainer: All you need to know about Trump's social media platform

Former US President Donald Trump recently announced the new Trump Media and technology Group Corp. (TMTG). Here’s everything you need to know about Trump’s social media platform.

What is Trump’s social media platform all about?

We all know how Trump was active on most social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. He had millions of followers before he was permanently banned after the attack on the US Capitol on January 6. However, in February 2021, the former president founded TMTG. The new step is aiming “to create a rival to the liberal media consortium and fight back against the ‘Big Tech’ companies of Silicon Valley”. Prior to the Ban, Trump had over 57 million followers on the Meta platforms and 89 million on Twitter.

Now, almost eight months later, the tech and social media firm announced the news of merging with DWAC t launch TRUTH Socialm a new social network. “I created TRUTH Social and TMTG to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech. We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced,” said Trump. According to the former president, the platform will be rolling out in the first quarter of 2022. And, users can soon use it and start sending ‘TRUTHS’ (posts). Additionally, they will also be launching a video-on-demand subscription known as TMTG+. This feature is focusing on not just entertainment programs but also podcasts and news.

How will TMTG affect other socials?

The launch of TMTG and TMTG+ will most probably be affecting several social media platforms. Trump’s social media venture is also aiming to attract a part of the Big tech audience. For example, Twitter alone rakes a least 211 million monetizable active users every day. Additionally, the start of TMTG+ can increase the intense competition prevailing in the streaming space. After all, established platforms such as Disney+ and Netflix are exploring newer features including gaming.

TMTG+ will reach an average of 40 million users by 2026. On the other hand, around the same time, TMTG is expected to reach 81 million users. The platform is also on the lookout for opportunities to make a ‘cancel-proof’ alternative in key areas including web services and payment systems.
