World number one Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he will compete at the Tokyo Olympics.
In the video post, Djokovic said: “Cannot disappoint my little friend Koujirou. I booked my flight for Tokyo and will proudly be joining #TeamSerbia for the Olympics.”
“I am very proud to pack for Tokyo and join our national team in the fight for the brightest medals on the Olympic arenas,” Djokovic tweeted.
“For me, the game for Serbia has always been a special joy and motivation and I will do my best to make us all happy! Let’s go.”
Djokovic has been phenomenal this year. He has won the Grand Slam title of the year having earlier won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. Many Tennis legends have already pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem. So, Djokovic is a favorite to win an Olympic singles gold. And he is on the verge of becoming the first man ever to win a Golden Slam.
No man has ever won the four slams and Olympic gold in the same year, with Germany’s Steffi Graf the only player to accomplish the feat in 1988.
It will be Djokovic’s third Olympics after a fourth-place finish at London 2012. He was also Serbia’s flag bearer at London Olympics. Djokovic was knocked out in the first round by Juan Martin del Potro in Rio Olympics 2016.
