Who is Victor Wembanyama, a 17-year-old ‘generational talent’ coming to the NBA?

Victor Wembanyama: Everything to know about the 'generational talent' who is set to light up NBA

Numerous NBA scouts and important decision-makers flocked to Las Vegas at the beginning of this month to catch a glimpse into the future. In the first of two exhibition games, the G League Ignite, an NBA development team in Nevada, welcomed Metropolitan 92. Scoot Henderson’s performance turned eyebrows, but talent scouts were drawn to a 17-year-old named Victor Wembanyama, who is 7 feet 4 inches tall.

Victor Wembanyama is a power forward for Metropolitans 92

Wembanyama, a 17-year-old French professional basketball player for Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92, is a power forward for the Parisian team and is 2.20 metres tall. He is recognised as one of the most promising talents of the future. Wembanyama is also expected to be selected first overall in the 2023 NBA draft. In his first game in the United States, he managed to raise the buzz surrounding him by scoring 37 points, including seven three-pointers from 11 attempts, and crushing five blocks.

As a result, Wembanyama’s name has been spreading lately. A video showcasing the young sensation’s skills as he introduced himself to the basketball fraternity was posted on YouTube in late 2020. Given his height, court use, and precision, it appears the adolescent was destined for the sport and has the talent and abilities to succeed.

Felix Wembanyama, who was born in 2004 in the Le Chesney neighbourhood of Paris, was a long jumper (6 feet 6 inches). Additionally, Elodie, his mother, is over six feet tall and a former basketball player and coach. As was already said, it’s not just his height that makes him a desirable candidate. Wembanyama, whose wingspan was recently measured at 8 feet, is a potent shot-blocker, rim protector, and outside shooter.

“when he is on the court, it’s another game”

The sporting director of the French club SIG Strasbourg, Nicola Alberni, is already smitten with Wembanyama. According to The Guardian, when he is on the court, “it’s another game.” “You think you can shoot because you don’t think he’s that close, but in actuality, he’s so far away that you are unaware of how close he is. You cannot challenge any of his passes once he has passed the ball. He serves as an extra point guard. Because no one can get there, he is always wide open when he fires.

“I become a basketball fan when I watch him play. Wembanyama is a unique package of everything. As long as he can stay healthy I really think he can be one of the best players that ever played the game.”

That type of talent and skill just puts a smile on your face if you play basketball: Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant has also joined in and recently told, as per si.com, “That type of talent and skill just puts a smile on your face if you play basketball. The evolution of the game has taken us this far. We got a 7’5″ dude that’s able to do everything on the court. It’s inspiring to a lot of people.” He added, “I heard a comment he said; somebody compared him to a few players in the league and he was like ‘I think I’d do myself a disservice if I compared myself to one or two players. I’m going to take from everybody.’ That’s such a profound statement and made me a big fan of his.”

LA Lakers’ LeBron James lauded the youngster by saying, “Everybody has been labelling this unicorn thing,” James said. “Everybody has been a unicorn for the last two years, but he’s more like an alien. I’ve never seen — no one has ever seen anyone as tall as Wembanyama is, but as fluid and as graceful as he is out on the floor.

“His ability to put the ball on the floor, shoot step-back jumpers out of the post, step-back 3s, catch-and-shoot 3s, block shots … He’s for sure a generational talent,” he further asserted.
