Watch: Shocking video forces three-time gold medalist Charlotte Dujardin out of Olympics

Disgraced Olympian Withdraws Amid Controversy

British Olympian Charlotte Dujardin has withdrawn from the 2024 Paris Olympics after a shocking video surfaced showing her repeatedly whipping a horse during a training session four years ago. The three-time gold medalist’s actions have led to an investigation and a provisional suspension.

Video emergence and public reaction

The disturbing footage, depicting Dujardin continuously whipping a horse in a dirt training area, shows the animal reacting with visible fear. At one point, the horse attempts to pull away from Dujardin before she strikes it again.

The Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) received the video through a formal complaint filed by a lawyer. The incident occurred at a private stable, according to the FEI’s statement.

FEI investigation and suspension

Following the video’s release, the FEI initiated an investigation. Dujardin confirmed her identity and acknowledged the inappropriate nature of her conduct. The FEI, along with British Equestrian and British Dressage, has imposed a provisional suspension, barring her from national and international events.

Dujardin’s public apology

Dujardin addressed the incident on Instagram, expressing regret: “A video has emerged from four years ago which shows me making an error of judgment during a coaching session. What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train horses or coach my pupils. There is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment.”

She continued, “I am sincerely sorry for my actions and devastated that I have let everyone down, including Team GB, fans, and sponsors. I will cooperate fully with the FEI, British Equestrian Federation, and British Dressage during their investigations.”

Jason Brautigam, Chief Executive of British Dressage, highlighted the severity of the historical allegations and affirmed their zero-tolerance stance on breaches of equine welfare policies. FEI President Ingmar De Vos echoed this sentiment, expressing deep disappointment while acknowledging Dujardin’s remorse and willingness to take responsibility.

Dujardin’s Olympic achievements

Charlotte Dujardin, 39, is celebrated for her accomplishments in equestrian sports. She won two gold medals for team and individual dressage at the 2012 London Olympics, another gold in individual dressage in 2016, and has accumulated six Olympic medals in total, including two bronzes from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the equestrian community awaits further developments in this high-profile case.
