Amidst Team India’s poor performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup, reports of Virat Kohli losing his ODI captaincy are resurfacing. It has not been long since Team India’s captain’s T20 fiasco took place. Virat gave up T20 leadership on September 16. These rumours turning true shouldn’t come as a shock to the fans. It seems like BCCI is now looking for trophies and hence, Rohit Sharma may take up limited over leadership leaving Kohli to focus on his batting as well as Test match leadership.
Virat Kohli has been struggling with his captaincy and it is not hidden from anyone. Though India is doing well under his leadership in the bilateral series, they are yet to win the ICC tournament in recent times. According to a PTI report, the BCCI may discuss Kohli’s ODI captaincy future. Furthermore, splitting captaincy in shorter formats, having one player serve as white-ball captain makes more sense. This will not only relieve the player from being overburdened with responsibilities but will also let them focus on batting.
BCCI may discuss Kohli’s ODI captaincy future
Team India will play only 3 ODI home games in February against West Indies. Hence, the BCCI will be looking forward to the preparation of the World Cup 2023. The upcoming tournament will be in Australia. Looking at the current list of players, Rohit Sharma seems to be the strongest contender to take over the limited-overs captaincy. He will soon officially be Team India’s T20 captain after the t20 world cup.
This ongoing tournament seems like an ultimatum to Captain Kohli. The team’s performance has been extremely worrisome. Hence, it will be interesting to see if Ganguly and the board will keep their faith in Kohli to let him lead another tournament or if he will have to step down making way for Sharma. There are talks about Kohli’s days as limited-overs captain being numbered. Irrespective of what happens in the future, we hope India’s drought for the ICC trophy ends soon.
