UEFA Awards 2023: Erling Haaland is having a dream run. After winning the PFA Awards 2023 Player of the Year title, the Norwegian striker has now won the UEFA Awards 2023 Player of the Year accolade.
Notably, Haaland had an outstanding debut season in England, leading Manchester City to their first-ever Champions League win and treble.
The 23-year-old was ruthless in front of goal, netting 52 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions as Pep Guardiola’s club won the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in a spectacular triple. Haaland finished as the leading scorer in both tournaments, with 12 goals in Europe and 36 goals in the Premier League, a new record.
Pep Guardiola named UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year
Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was named UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the English team to an unprecedented treble.
City have won 13 major trophies under Guardiola, including five Premier League crowns in the last six seasons. They recently won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time on August 16, making the Spaniard the first coach to do so with three different clubs.
Aitana Bonmatí wins UEFA Women’s Player of the Year
Aitana Bonmat, Barcelona’s outstanding midfielder, was voted UEFA Women’s Player of the Year at the UEFA Awards 2023.
After a season in which her sides won the UEFA Women’s Champions League and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 25-year-old Barcelona and Spain midfielder finished ahead of Sam Kerr and Olga Carmona in the voting.
In the Women’s Champions League, Bonmat had a competition-high 13 goal contribution (five goals and eight assists) as the Blaugrana won the title.
Bonmat also served as Spain’s playmaker at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Her double against Switzerland in the round of 16 spurred Spain’s first-ever major senior knockout triumph, and she was named Player of the Tournament when they won their first senior title.
