Tokyo Olympics: PV Sindhu, Atanu Das, Satish Kumar shine but day 6 ends with Mary Kom’s exit

After Mirabai Chanu won the first medal for India on the opening day, India is still in search of the second medal at the Tokyo Olympics. But, overall results-wise Day 6 was probably the best day for Indian Contingent at the Tokyo Olympics so far. India started their day with a bang – PV Sindhu advanced to the quarterfinals, the Men’s Hockey team defeated Argentina, Atanu Das stunned World Champion Oh Jinhyek.

Archery

Atanu Das stunned former Olympic & World Champion Oh Jinhyek of South Korea 6-4 in the 2nd round. The game went into the shoot-off, where Jinhyek hit the first shot at 9. In response, Atanu Das shoots a perfect 10 to clinch a thrilling victory. Easily, this was the best moment of Atanu’s career.

“It was a tense moment. I’ve faced shoot-offs before. I knew he was shooting first, and if he would shoot a nine, I could win it. I just tried to maintain my focus. It was a tense moment, a win or lose situation. So I just went for the win,” Atanu said after the win (To World Archery)

Before this, Atanu defeated Chinese Taipei’s Deng Yu-Cheng 6-4 in the 1/32 Eliminations round. Atanu Das will face Japan’s Furukawa Takaharu in the round of 16 on Saturday.

Badminton

PV Sindhu defeated Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt in straight sets and booked her place in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Individual events on Thursday. She crunched 13th seed Blichfeldt 21-15, 21-13 in a 41-minute match.

“A lot of people have told me that. I will take that as a compliment. But for me each and every game is important. It’s important to focus on every point, and not the match.” The Rio Olympics silver medalist said on reaching second successive quarterfinals at Olympics.

Sindhu will face Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals tomorrow (30th July).

Hockey

Indian men’s hockey team defeated defending Olympic Champion Argentina by 3-1 in their fourth group A game at Oi Hockey Stadium North Pitch on Thursday. And with this win, India has qualified for the Quarterfinals. Varun Kumar, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Harmanpreet Singh were the goalscorers for India.

“That was a wake-up call for us. We were very disappointed and we focused on our next matches,” Manpreet Singh said on humiliating defeat against Australia

India will play their last group match against Japan tomorrow.

Swimming

Sajan Prakash finished 46th in Men’s 100m butterfly event. He finished second with a timing of 53.45 in his Heat.

Boxing

Indian boxing star MC Mary Kom has been knocked out of Tokyo Olympics. She lost to Colombia’s Ingrit Lorena Victoria Valencia in a women’s 51kg by 3:2 split decision. Valencia dominated the first set, but Mary Kom made a great comeback in the 2nd & 3rd set. Overall points (Total of all 5 judges after 3 sets) were in favor of Lorena, which helped her to clinch the victory.

Mary Kom, one of the greatest ever sportsperson India has ever produced. The 38-year-old has won a bronze medal at the Olympics in London in 2012. She did not participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Mary Kom has won the AIBA World Championship six times. She has also being a gold medallist at the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

Some sports have legends, some have Mary Kom.

Satish Kumar through to quarterfinals

India’s Satish Kumar enters the men’s +91kg quarterfinal defeating Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown in their Round-of-16 bout. Satish defeated Ricardo Brown by a split decision of 4-1.

Sailing

Indian sailing pair of KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar finished seventh in one of the two races in men’s skiff 49er. Overall they are at the 17th position at the Tokyo Olympics.

Vishnu Saravanan finishes 23rd in the Men’s One Person Dinghy Laser Race 08 event. Nethra Kumanan finishes 22nd in the Women’s One Person Dinghy Laser Race 07 event.

Shooting

After a disappointing start at the Tokyo Olympics, Manu Bhaker came up with a strong show in the 25 m Pistol event. The teenage shooter finished at 5th place in the women’s 25 m Pistol Pre Qualification round on Thursday. She shot 592 with 9 inner 10s.

The World No. 2 Rahi Sarnobat finished at the 25th position in women’s 25m pistol Pre-qualification round.

Both Manu and Rahi will play the Rapid round tomorrow. The top 8 after both the Pre Qualification and the Rapid rounds will make the final. The final round will take place after the rapid rounds on Friday (30th July) afternoon.

Rowing

India’s rowing duo finished 11th overall in Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls. This was the best-ever performance from Indian rowers at the Olympics on Thursday. Also, Arjun and Arvind finished 5th in Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls B Final.

Golf

India’s Diksha Dagar qualified for the Tokyo Games after South Africa’s Paula Reto withdrew from the Games. She will join Aditi Ashok in the team.
