India made a winning start on Day 3 of the Tokyo Olympics as Bhavani Devi, the first Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympics, Sharath Kamal entered into the Round of 32. But ended in disappointment as Manika Batra failed to qualify for the Round of 16. The women’s hockey team lost to Germany.
Let’s look at India’s performance on Day 3 at Tokyo Olympics in each event.
Fencing
Historic day for India as we made our debut in Fencing at the Olympics. India’s lone representative at fencing, Bhavani Devi got off to a winning start in the women’s individual sabre in the Tokyo Olympics on Monday. (https://cashcofinancial.com) She defeated Tunisia’s Nadia Ben Azizi by 15-3 in just 6 minutes and 14 seconds. But then she eventually lost to France’s Manon Brunet in the Round of 32.
A proud moment for Bhavani Devi as she became the first fencer from India to make it to the Olympic Games. It was a great learning experience for her and hopefully, she’ll be one step closer to the medal at Paris 2024.
Archery
India’s men archery team trio of Pravin Jadhav, A Das, Tarundeep Rai defeated Kazakhstan’s trio by 6-2 in the Round of 16 match and qualified for the quarterfinals. However, they lost to mighty Koreans 0-6 in the Quarterfinals.
Table Tennis
Sharath Kamal entered the round of 32 in the men’s singles Table Tennis event. He defeated Portugal’s Tiago Apolonia in the second Round 2-11, 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9.
Sharath will face defending Olympic and World champion Ma Long of China in the round of 32.
Suritha Mukherjee lost to Portuguese Fu Yu in straight sets in the second round of the women’s singles table tennis. A world No. 55, beat the Indian tennis player 11-3, 11-3, 11-5, 11-5.
Manika Batra’s campaign at the Tokyo Olympics came to an end after she lost in straight games to 10th seed Sofia Polcanova in the women’s singles third round on Monday. Sofia Polcanova beat Manika in the successive four sets – 11-8, 11-2, 11-5, 11-7.
Although Manika had a good campaign as she beat Tin-Tin Ho in the opening game and upset the higher-ranked Margaryta Pesotska of Ukraine in the second round.
Badminton
The Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost in straight games against world number one Marcus Gideon Fernaldi and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia in their second Group A match.
The Indian duo will play their last group match against England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy.
Tennis
Sumit Nagal was knocked out by the world number two Daniil Medvedev in straight sets of 6-2, 6-1. Nagal looked good in patches and was able to beat Medvedev on some occasions, but not good enough to win the game. Previously, Nagal had won his first-round against Uzbekistan Denis Istomin. It was India’s first men’s singles win at Olympics in 25 years.
Shooting
Angad Vir Singh Bajwa and Mairaj Ahmed Khan failed to qualify for men’s individual skeet qualification round at the Asaka Shooting range here on Monday. Angad Singh finished 18th (120 pts), while Mairaj Khan was 25th (117 pts) of 30 shooters.
Boxing
Boxer Ashish Kumar Chaudhary bowed out by China’s Erbieke Tuoheta in the 75kg at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday. Touheta defeated Ashish 5-0 in the round of 32.
Swimming
Indian swimmer Sajan Prakash failed to qualify for the semifinals in the men’s 200m Butterfly event. He finished 24th overall. Prakash will compete in the 100m Butterfly on Thursday.
Hockey
Indian women’s hockey team lost 0-2 to Germany in their second Pool A match at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday. It was their second consecutive defeat at the Tokyo Olympics after losing 1-5 against the Netherlands in their opening match. India missed many crucial opportunities in the game including a penalty stroke by Gurjit Kaur.
