Tokyo 2020 day 10: Indian women’s hockey team scripts history, Kamalpreet finishes sixth

Indian Hockey Team

A historic day for the Indian women’s hockey team. They etched their name in the history books defeating the three-times Olympic gold medalist Australia in the semifinals on Monday. While India’s medal contender Kamalpreet Kaur couldn’t make it to the Top 3. Indian equestrian rider Fouaad Mirza and Seigneur Medicott shine in their debut appearance at the Tokyo Olympics.

Let’s look at India’s performance on day 10 at Tokyo Olympics in each event.

Hockey

Indian women's hockey

The Indian women’s hockey team scripted history on Monday by qualifying for the Olympic Games semifinals for the first time, beating three-time champions Australia.

India’s solitary goal came in the 22nd minute when Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur converted India’s lone penalty corner. So far, in the tournament, India didn’t have a great record in Penalty corners. The team secured 33 penalty corners out of which they’ve managed to convert just four chances with all the goals coming through variations. Gurjit Kaur rose to the occasion when it mattered and scored her first goal in the Olympics games.

“It’s a very happy & proud moment for us. Our daughter (Rani) has created history. It all happened because of her coach Baldev Singh. Before leaving for Tokyo, she said she’ll return with a medal” Rani Rampal father said (to ANI)

Equestrian

 Fouaad Mirza

Indian equestrian rider Fouaad Mirza and Seigneur Medicott have finished at 23rd position in the finals of equestrian eventing at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday. Earlier in the qualification round, the duo managed 8.00 penalty points in the show jumping session of eventing and finished 25th. Mirza was training in Germany for more than two years with his horses.

“I got a lot of excitement watching the tapes from a very young age. It’s a very expensive sport and I’m very lucky to have a sponsor. We’ve some good infrastructure but the government needs to be involved to run some programs to nurture young talents” Mirza said to PTI

Athletics

Kamalpreet Kaur

Kamalpreet Kaur of India finished sixth in the Final of the Women’s Discus Throw at the Tokyo Olympics. Kaur’s 3 throws out of 6 were foul attempts and on the 3 valid throws. She had a third-round throw of 63.70m to end at sixth. She also equaled 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Krishna Poonia’s performance in the 2012 London Olympics.

USA’s Valarie Allman won the Gold with a throw of 68.98meter. Germany’s K. Pudenz bagged Silver (66.86 m) and Perez from Cuba got the bronze medal (65.72 m).

Dutee Chand finished at 7th position in the Women’s 200 m Round 1. She ended with a timing of 23.85 seconds (season-best).

Shooting

Aishwary Pratap Singh

India’s shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Sanjeev Rajput failed to qualify for the finals in the men’s 50m Rifle event. Aishwary finished at 23rd position while Sanjeev at 32nd.
