The inaugural edition of Women’s IPL to be held in March 2023

There has been a lot of talk and speculation about when the first edition of the Women’s IPL will be held. Well, it seems like BCCI finally has an answer to this question. The competition is scheduled for March 2023. In order to accommodate the Women’s IPL, BCCI has rescheduled the women’s domestic schedule. The domestic women’s cricket season will now run from October through February rather than the customary November through April period.

Sourav Ganguly, the president of the BCCI, had declared that the committee intends to launch the Women’s IPL in 2023. “We are at the level of formulation to have a full-fledged WIPL. It is certainly going to happen,” he had said. “I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women’s IPL which will be as big and grand a success as men’s IPL,” said Sourav Ganguly, earlier this year.

RR and KKR franchises interested in buying teams in Women’s IPL

Additionally, he stated that the league’s preparations had already begun. In the meantime, all WIPL-related issues will be reviewed during the BCCI Annual General Meeting in September, where significant decisions will also be made. The sale of media rights in advance of the WIPL will be the main emphasis. Current IPL franchises and stakeholders have expressed a desire to purchase teams in the competition.

Notably, the owners of the Rajasthan Royals and the Knight Riders Group have openly declared an inclination to purchase franchises in the Women’s IPL. It has been reported that the existing IPL franchises will be given priority in purchasing teams in the Women’s T20 competition. The official confirmation from the BCCI is still awaited. The current domestic season will begin on October 11 with the T20 competition. It will end in February with the inter-zonal one-day tournament thereby giving time for Women’s IPL. Earlier, the BCCI ran the Women’s T20 Challenge for four editions, with the final run in 2022.
