On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, 25-22, to win Super Bowl LVIII. The first Super Bowl in Las Vegas was appropriately dramatic for the Entertainment Capital of the World.
Kansas City became the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots in 2003–04, breaking the NFL’s longest back-to-back drought.
The Chiefs also became the fourth team to win three Super Bowls in five years, joining the Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The 49ers’ heartbreaking loss is the franchise’s third defeat in eight games, with all three coming in recent appearances. They’ve lost two Super Bowls to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, and they haven’t won a Lombardi Trophy since 1994.
Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five seasons
Mahomes was in elementary school the last time a team won consecutive Super Bowls. There were eight repeat winners during the first 39 Super Bowls, but none in the last 18. Andy Reid was the losing coach when New England defeated Philadelphia 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX on February 6, 2005, for their second consecutive title.
