Sunrisers Hyderabad rope in Dale Steyn, Lara for coaching roles ahead of IPL 2022

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday announced its new coaching staff ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

West Indies legend Brian Lara and fast bowler Dale Steyn will be SRH’s batting and pace bowling coach respectively. Former Sri Lanka bowler Muttiah Muralitharan will continue as a spin bowling coach of SRH while former Indian cricketer Hemang Badani will be handling scouting duties along with being the fielding coach. Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody has returned to his role as head coach of SRH replacing Trevor Bayliss in the position and Simon Katich will be Moody’s deputy.

Regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, Dale Steyn picked 439 wickets in 93 Tests at an average of 22.95. The right-arm quick has 196 wickets in 125 ODIs and 64 wickets in 47 T20Is. Steyn, who has played 95 IPL matches while representing Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Lions, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. This will be Steyn’s first coaching stint after retiring from all forms of cricket in August this year. He had made his commentary debut during the men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

This is also will the coaching debut for Brian Lara. One of the greatest left-handed batters in the world, Lara scored 11,953 runs in 131 Test matches at an average of 52.88. The star Windies batter has 34 centuries, 9 double-centuries, and 48 half-centuries by his name. Simon Katich who has been roped in as an assistant coach is quite experienced in this field. He had been an assistant coach for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL from 2016 to 2019 before moving to RCB as their head coach until August 2021.

Hemang Badani, who has played 40 ODIs for India also been a coach for Chepauk Super Gilles (CSG) in Tamilnadu Preimer league. He guided CSG to the trophy in 2017, 2019, and 2021. Tom Moody was the Sunrisers’ first head coach since the side’s maiden season in 2016. He led the SRH to their maiden IPL title in 2016. Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad has retained three players. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, along with two uncapped Indian players – Abdul Samad and Umran Malik.
