A 34-year-old man from Spain broke the world record by running a 100-meter sprint while wearing high heels. According to Guinness World Records (GWR), on Friday, the Spanish “serial record-breaker” Christian Roberto López Rodrguez raced the quickest 100 meters in high heels in under 13 seconds.
What was the significance of the record?
Guinness World Records announced on their social media pages that the “fastest 100 meters in high heels (male) 12.82 secs by Christian Roberto Lopez Rodriguez”. (https://winandoffice.com/) Notably, he was just 3.24 seconds slower than Usain Bolt’s world record in the 100-meter sprint, and he did so while wearing stilettos!
Rodrguez was supposed to wear stiletto high-heeled shoes that were at least 7 cm high and no more than 1.5 centimeters wide at the tip, which significantly limits a runner’s stability and speed. The previous record in this category was established in 2019 by Germany’s André Ortolf, who ran a 100-meter sprint in heels in 14.02 seconds.
‘Very rigorous and specific’: Rodrguez on his preparation for breaking the record
Speaking about his preparations for breaking the record, Rodrguez told the GWR, “The preparation was very exhaustive and specific.” He added, “I find it very challenging to be able to run in high heels at high speed. In Spain, there are races like this, and they have always gone well for me.”
The Spanish runner, who also has Type 1 diabetes, said he set the record to demonstrate that people with the chronic condition “can do as much or more things than people without diabetes.”
‘Serial record-breaker’
According to the Guinness World Records website, Rodriguez is a “serial record-breaker” with approximately 60 Guinness World Records titles, 12 of which are for fastest 100 meters dashes in various categories. Among the 100-meter sprint records set by Rodriguez is the fastest 100-meter blindfolded (12.45 seconds), in clogs (12.58 seconds), sprinting backward (13.17 seconds), balancing a baseball bat on a finger (13.83 seconds), and balancing a guitar on a finger (14.31 seconds).
According to the GWR, he has also set several other records, including the longest duration of balancing a bicycle on the chin, which lasted nearly 10 minutes; the longest duration of balancing an object on the nose (2 hours 42 minutes); and the most consecutive stairs climbed while juggling three objects (2,082).
