Security tightened in New York for India-Pakistan T20 amid ISIS-K threat

New York’s Nassau County is implementing unprecedented security for the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan on June 9, following a terror threat, despite assurances from Governor Kathy Hochul that the threat is not credible “at this time.” The Eisenhower Park Stadium will host eight tournament matches, including three of India’s games, and a practice match against Bangladesh on June 1.

Governor’s assurance

Governor Kathy Hochul has instructed state police to enhance security to ensure the safety of attendees. “In preparation for the World Cup, my team has been working with federal & local law enforcement to keep attendees safe. While there is no credible threat at this time, I’ve directed NYPD to elevate security measures & we’ll continue to monitor as the event nears,” Hochul said on X.

Threat details

A CNN report highlighted safety precautions due to an ISIS-K threat earlier this year against the World Cup. Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder confirmed the threat in April, specifically targeting the India-Pakistan match, referencing a viral video urging a “lone wolf” attack.

Commissioner Ryder assured, “This is the largest security we’ve ever had in this county’s history, and the safest place in Nassau County on June 9th will be inside that stadium.” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman compared the event to a “Super Bowl on steroids” and emphasized extensive preparations over six months, involving coordinated efforts with federal agencies, including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.

Robust security plans

The ICC responded to the threat by affirming a comprehensive security plan. “The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority. We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified,” the ICC stated.

India, led by Rohit Sharma, will begin their campaign against Ireland on June 5, followed by the high-stakes match against Pakistan on June 9, and then face hosts USA on June 12. The extensive security measures underscore the commitment to ensuring a safe and successful tournament.
