Cristiano Ronaldo is set to become the first recipient of the newly-named Paolo Rossi Award. The award will be given to the top scorer during a Serie A season, according to Juvefc.com.
According to the Calciomercato, the Italian Footballers Association has officially decided to rename the top Serie A goal-scorer award in honor of the late legend Paolo Rossi.
However, the Italian passed away in December 2020 at the age of 64. And in honor of his achievements, the AIC has renamed the top scorer award to the Paolo Rossi award. He was a key player in Italy’s 1982 World Cup victory. Rossi scored six goals to win in the tournament. He also won the Golden Ball for the player of the tournament. He scored 20 goals in 48 matches for Italy and won the Ballon D’or award in 1982.
Rossi was one of the most vital players of the Juventus squad in the 1980s. He scored 43 goals in 137 appearances for Juventus. Rossi won two Serie A titles, the Coppa Italia, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the European Cup.
So, Cristiano Ronaldo is the first recipient of this award. The 36-year-old had a dream in the last season for Juventus. He scored 29 goals and finished as Serie A’s leading scorer for the first time in his career. And with this milestone, Ronaldo also became the only player to achieve the feat in the Premier League, La Liga, and Italy’s top flight.
