Rohit Sharma aims at a milestone in the first T20I against West Indies

After Team India completely outplayed West Indies in the ODI series under captain Shikhar Dhawan, now it’s time for T20Is. Regular captain Rohit Sharma is back to take the charge. He will aim not just at winning the opening game of the series but will also look forward to completing a little personal milestone. Rohit Sharma has been surpassed by Martin Guptil to become the T20 player with the most runs.

During the Sri Lanka series in February, Rohit had surpassed fellow countryman Virat Kohli to be the player with the most runs scored in T20Is. Following Guptill’s 31-ball 40 against Scotland in the first T20I in Edinburgh, who had been following him closely, Rohit has now been passed by Guptill. Guptill currently leads India’s skipper Rohit Sharma by 20 runs with 3,399 in the shortest format of the game. So, for Rohit to reclaim the lead for the most runs scored in men’s T20Is, he now needs 21 runs.

Rohit Sharma 21 runs short to top the list

In the year 2021, Kohli became the first player to surpass the 3000 run threshold in Twenty20 Internationals. Brendon McCullum, another NZ player and current test coach of the England Team, was the first player to surpass the 2000-run milestone. In fact, in men’s T20Is, McCullum was also the first to surpass 1000 runs.

Team India will face WI today in the first T20I of the 5-match series. For the ODI portion of the tour, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Virat Kohli were all rested in addition to Rohit Sharma. KL Rahul won’t be able to play in the T20 series because of Covid. Meanwhile Bumrah and Kohli will prolong their rest. After the series concludes on August 7, the national team will turn its attention to the 2022 Asia Cup. The tournament was earlier to be played in Sri Lanka. However, owing to the crisis it will now continue in UAE from August 27 to September 11.
