According to reports from Australian media, Ricky Ponting, the former captain of Australia, was taken to the hospital on 2nd December after feeling uneasy while commentating on the third day of Australia’s maiden test match against the West Indies at Perth Stadium.
Around noon, the world cup-winning Australian captain left Perth Stadium feeling sick around lunchtime. The 47-year-old is a member of the commentary team for Australia’s two-test home series against the West Indies on the 7 Network.
“Ricky Ponting is unwell and will not be providing commentary for the remainder of today’s coverage,” a spokesperson for broadcaster Channel 7 said in a statement to Australian media.
No confirmed details have emerged or been made public about the condition of Ponting’s health. Ponting had commentated for almost 40 minutes before the incident occurred right at the stroke of lunch on Day 3. He was taken to the hospital in a car accompanied by his former Australia teammate and coach Justin Langer.
Former cricketers’ health difficulties are now more widely known- Shane Warne’s recent death, which came after Dean Jones’ in 2020, and Ryan Campbell’s cardiac event.
The Australians won the World Cup three times in a row from 1999 to 2007, and pointing helped the team win the Champions Trophy twice in a row in 2006 and 2009.
