On March 24, 2022, MS Dhoni once again finished off in style, when he handed over CSK’s captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja. Cricket lovers are well aware of how unpredictable Dhoni and his decisions can be. They’ve seen it earlier when he quit captaincy of the national team and when he announced retirement from international cricket. However, even though fans are upset about this sudden announcement, Dhoni has given them more than enough reasons to celebrate. For starters, he ended his captaincy tenure on a high by making his team win a trophy after a terrible season in 2020. Now, it’s time to revisit MS Dhoni’s magnificent IPL captaincy records.
MS Dhoni’s magnificent IPL captaincy records
- Most wins as IPL captain: Dhoni has 121 victories in 204 matches. In the Indian Premier League, he has the most wins as a captain. On 82 instances, he has been on the losing side. One match ended in a no result. He has a 59.60 victory percentage, second only to Rohit Sharma (59.68) among players who have captained more than 100 games.
- Second highest runs as an IPL captain: Not merely with his leadership skills but MS has also contributed to the success of his team with bat. He is second to Virat Kohli when it comes to scoring most runs as the skipper. Virat has scored 4881 while Dhoni has 4456 runs. What makes this achievement stand out is the fact that he comes to bat in the lower middle order.
- 4 IPL trophies: Under his leadership, CSK has played 8 finals out of which they’ve won 4. Amazing! Right? They have won the trophies in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. Only Mumbai Indians with 5 trophies are ahead of them. CSK were also the first team to successfully defend their title in 2011, and have qualified for the playoffs in every season since its outgoing captain took over, except in 2020.
- 2 Champions League titles: CSK has also won the Champions League twice under Dhoni’s leadership. He is the only skipper in IPL history to win the now-defunct Champions League twice. Mumbai Indians have also won twice, but under Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma. Furthermore, CSK’s victories occurred in two different countries: South Africa and India.
