An extraordinary day for the Indian Para-athlete contingent at Tokyo Paralympics. India bagged three medals today and gave a wonderful gift on National Sports day. Bhavina Patel scripted history by winning the silver medal in table tennis. Nishad Kumar won the silver medal in the high jump and Vinod Kumar clinches the bronze medal in the discus throw event on Sunday.
India’s Nishad Kumar clinched a silver medal in the final event of the High Jump T47 category on Sunday. He won silver with the best effort of 2.06m and also went on to create an Asian Record.
USA’s Roderick Townsend won the gold medal. He recorded the jump of 2.15m, while Dallas Wise won the bronze medal. Both Dallas and Nishad made the jump of 2.06 m, but Nishad had crossed the 2.02 mark in his first attempt while Wise took two attempts, as a result, Nishad bagged silver.
Vinod Kumar won the bronze medal with a best effort of 19.91m in the men’s discus throw F52 event. Vinod Kumar broke Asian Record with the best throw of 19.91m and bagged the bronze medal on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, India’s star paddler Bhavina Patel created history as she clinched a silver medal in her maiden Paralympic Games debut. She became the first table tennis player ever to win a medal at the Paralympics for India. She also becomes only the second women para-athlete to finish at the podium after Deepa Malik’s claimed silver at the Women’s Shot Put F53 in Rio 2016.
