Nick Kyrgios, the Australian tennis player, has run into difficulties once again after messing with a fan during the Wimbledon 2022 final against Novak Djokovic earlier this year. A lawyer, Anna Palus, who Kyrgios had accused of having “700 drinks” during the Wimbledon 2022 final is filing a lawsuit against him. She is suing the Australian tennis star for defamation.
After receiving a code violation for swearing when a spectator yelled out before a second serve, Kyrgios complained about Palus’ behavior. Palus claimed that when she was taken from the court, she had only had two drinks.
Palus confirmed that she will be suing Kyrgios, saying that her goal is to “clear her name.” She criticized Kyrgios for making an irrational and unfounded claim that caused “substantial damage” to her and her family as millions of people read and watched the Australian’s remarks.
“Mr. Kyrgios made a baseless allegation against me”: Palus
“On Sunday, 10 July 2022, I attended the final of the Wimbledon tennis championships with my mother. It was an event we had been looking forward to for some time. During the course of the final, Nick Kyrgios made a reckless and entirely baseless allegation against me,” said Palus through a solicitor.
“Not only did this cause considerable harm on the day, resulting in my temporary removal from the arena, but Mr. Kyrgios’s false allegation was broadcasted to, and read by millions around the world, causing me and my family very substantial damage and distress.”
“I am not litigious, but after much consideration, I have no alternative but to instruct my solicitors Brett Wilson LLP to bring defamation proceedings against Mr. Kyrgios to clear my name. The need to obtain vindication, and to prevent a repetition of the allegation, are the only reasons for taking legal action,” she said.
“She’s distracting me”: Kyrgios
Kyrgios lost the Grand Slam Championship after falling to Djokovic in the Wimbledon 2022 final by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3). Kyrgios complained to the umpire during the third set of the championship match against the Serb, saying Palus was interfering with his serve. Before accusing her of appearing intoxicated, he urged the umpire to remove her from the game.
He told the umpire– “She’s distracting me when I’m serving in a Wimbledon final. There’s no bigger occasion, you didn’t believe me and then she did it again. It nearly cost me my game.”
“Why is she still here? She’s drunk out of her mind and speaking to me in the middle of a game. What’s acceptable? Okay, kick her out. I know exactly which one it is. The one in the dress, who looks like she’s had 700 drinks, bro.”
These comments by Kyrgios became viral, and soon after, Palus revealed her side of the story. She said that she had only had one glass of rose and one Pimm’s. Palus also claimed that she was just trying to support him.
There are other court cases Kyrgios is dealing with in addition to the lawsuit from Palus. The 27-year-old was accused of allegedly abusing his ex-girlfriend in December after being summoned before an Australian court in July
