Lionel Messi has broken many world records on the field in his career but this time it’s off the field. Messi has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo to have the most liked sports picture on Instagram, overtaking a record 20 million likes.

Messi posted a photo of himself with the Copa America title after Argentina defeated Brazil in the finals earlier this month. The Argentine striker was adjudged with the Player of the Tournament award. He scored four goals, five assists and claimed his first international trophy.

Messi had posted the picture on Instagram and he captioned the post as: “What a beautiful madness! This is unbelievable! Thank you, God! We are the champions!”

The previous record for the most liked sports picture was held by Cristiano Ronaldo (19.8 million likes) after he paid tribute to Diego Maradona following his death. Messi’s post is also the sixth most-liked post in the history of the social media network.

Earlier this week, The six-time Ballon d’Or winner has agreed to sign a new contract with his FC Barcelona. Messi is with Barca since he was 13 years old. According to reports, Messi has agreed to take a 50 percent pay cut compared to his previous contract, which was worth more than 125 million euros per season, while continuing his playing career until 2026 at least.
