Liam Gurthie records the most expensive spell in BBL history

Brisbane Heat pacer Liam Guthrie set a new record for the most expensive bowling spell in Big Bash League (BBL) history during the match between the Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars on Monday. Melbourne Stars bagged the third win of the season by defeating Brisbane Heat by 20 runs at Gabba.

Stars posted 207/9 in the first innings, with the help of opener Joe Clarke’s 85 off 44 balls & Cartwright’s 79 off 44 balls. At one stage, Stars were reduced to 16/3, but the 151-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Clarke and Cartwright powered them to a match-winning total. In reply, Brisbane Heat fell short by 20 runs and ended up scoring 187/9 in 20 overs. Chris Lynn (57) and Ben Duckett (54) scored the fifties and gave them some hope but Heat kept losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually ended up losing the match.

Liam Guthrie breaks Ben Dwarshuis’ BBL record

During the game, Brisbane Heat fast bowler Liam Guthrie registered the worst-ever bowling figures in the BBL conceding 70 runs in his four-over spell. With this spell, he has now joined Indian fast bowler Basil Thampi in a club of bowlers who have leaked 70 or more runs in a T20 match.

Gurthie gave away just eight runs in his first over. In the second over, he was hit for a couple of sixes by Cartwright followed by a 20 runs third over. Although, he picked the wicket of Cartwright in his last over but also conceded 23 runs. Both Clarke and Cartwright attacked him as the 24-year-old registered the most expensive spell in BBL history.

Previously, this record was held by Ben Dwarshuis, who conceded 61 runs in a BBL match between the Sydney Sixers and the Melbourne Stars, setting a new record for the most expensive spell. Liam Guthrie broke that record with a spell of 2/70 against the Stars earlier tonight.
